NTPC Green Energy Appoints Sarit Maheshwari as New CEO, Replacing Rajiv Gupta

In a significant leadership transition, NTPC Green Energy Limited (NGEL) has announced the appointment of Sarit Maheshwari as its new Chief Executive Officer (CEO), effective May 10, 2025. This decision was approved by the company’s Board of Directors during a meeting held on Saturday.

The appointment marks the end of Rajiv Gupta’s tenure as CEO, who has officially stepped down from his role as Key Managerial Personnel (KMP) on the same date, according to a regulatory filing submitted to the stock exchange.

Leadership Shift at NTPC Green Energy

The change in leadership comes at a pivotal time for NTPC Green Energy, a wholly-owned subsidiary of NTPC Limited, India’s largest power utility. With India’s growing emphasis on clean energy transition, this move is expected to shape the company’s strategic direction over the coming years.

The filing noted:

“The Board of Directors approved cessation of Mr. Rajiv Gupta as Chief Executive Officer (Key Managerial Personnel) with effect from May 10, 2025, and appointment of Mr. Sarit Maheshwari as the Chief Executive Officer with effect from the same date.”

Who Is Sarit Maheshwari?

Sarit Maheshwari brings to the table over 35 years of rich experience in the power sector, having held key leadership roles at NTPC. Most recently, he served as the Head of Project at NTPC Korba, one of the largest and most strategic power stations in India.

Maheshwari’s appointment is seen as a move to bolster NTPC Green Energy’s capabilities in project execution, operational excellence, and sustainable energy growth. With India’s target of achieving 500 GW of non-fossil fuel capacity by 2030, his experience is expected to play a vital role in helping NGEL expand its renewable energy portfolio.

Strategic Importance of the Appointment

The appointment of a veteran like Maheshwari signals a shift towards deeper operational integration and fast-tracking renewable energy projects, especially in solar and wind segments. NTPC Green Energy has been ramping up efforts to emerge as a key player in India’s clean energy revolution.

This move also aligns with NTPC’s broader vision to become a net-zero company by 2070 and a leading integrated energy firm on a global scale.

What This Means for NTPC Green Energy

Under Maheshwari’s leadership, industry experts anticipate:

  • Acceleration of solar and wind power capacity additions
  • Greater focus on green hydrogen, battery storage, and emerging clean technologies
  • Strengthening of public-private partnerships in clean energy space
  • Improved project execution timelines and operational efficiency

As India continues to decarbonize its energy landscape, NTPC Green Energy’s leadership will be crucial in meeting national renewable energy goals and sustainable development commitments under COP28 and beyond.
