Shivam Verma, the Deputy Commissioner of Police (Zone 7) for Ahmedabad City, said on Wednesday that the five suspects had been placed under arrest for a period of three days.
Tuesday night in Ahmedabad, following BJP and Congress workers hurling stones at one another outside the Opposition party’s state headquarters, Rajiv Gandhi Bhavan, in protest of Rahul Gandhi’s alleged anti-Hindu remarks in the Lok Sabha, five people were taken into custody and two First Information Reports were filed.
Shivam Verma, the Deputy Commissioner of Police (Zone 7) for Ahmedabad City, said on Wednesday that the five suspects had been placed under arrest for a period of three days.
On July 2, both FIRs were filed at the Ellisbridge police station in Ahmedabad.
Constable Karmaraj Bhagvatsinh of the Paldi police station filed a complaint after being hurt in the altercation. The complaint was directed at Congress leaders Shehzadkhan Pathan, who is the leader of the opposition in the Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation, and Pragatiben Nandaniya, as well as “around 200-250 Congress workers” and “a mob of 150-200 BJP persons.”
The other FIR was filed in response to a complaint made in Ahmedabad by Vinay Desai, the head of the BJP’s Yuva Morcha unit, which named 26 Congress employees, including
Harsh Ishwarbhai Parmar (age 23), Vimalbhai Pansara (age 50), Manish Thakor (age 47), Sanjay Barot (age 57), and Mukeshbhai Datania (age 68) have been detained. They are the accused in the First Information Report (FIR) that was filed in response to Desai’s allegation.
Sections 189 (2) (unlawful assembly), 191 (2) (rioting), 191 (3) (rioting with deadly weapon), 190 (unlawful assembly with common object), 125 (b) (grievous hurt), 121 (2) (voluntarily causing grievous hurt to deter public servant from his duty), and 121 (1) (voluntarily causing hurt to deter public servant from his duty) of Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) were among the charges brought against the accused in the FIR based on Bhagvatsinh’s complaint.
Along with rioting and unlawful assembly, the accused were additionally charged under sections 115(2) (voluntarily causing harm), 117(2) (voluntarily causing grievous pain), 351(3) (criminal intimidation), and 324 2 of the BNS in the FIR filed in response to Desai’s complaint.
The police had orchestrated a bandobast “as BJP’s Ahmedabad city Yuva Morcha planned to protest without permission,” as per Bhagvatsinh’s allegation. He said that when both parties’ workers were yelling slogans, “suddenly, Congress workers and their leaders incited the people of BJP and started stone-pelting,” at which point BJP workers retaliated by throwing stones as well.
“The event yesterday resulted in the injuries of five police officers, including an ACP. Two FIRs have been filed by us. There are now five people under arrest. “CCTV footage demonstrated their involvement in the violence,” Verma stated.
Workers from the Bajrang Dal and VHP broke into the Congress headquarters on Monday night, tagging Gandhi’s posters with black ink. The headquarters was secured. Although no formal complaint has been made over the event as of yet, Verma told The Indian Express that “the police are taking action.”
“The cowardly and violent attack on the Gujarat Congress office further strengthens my point about the BJP and the Sangh Parivar,” Gandhi wrote in a Hindi post on X, criticizing the BJP. The BJP members who incite violence and hatred lack a fundamental understanding of

“The Gujarati people are able to see right through their lies and will deliver a severe lesson to the BJP government.” I’ll say it again: India will prevail in Gujarat. He continued.
