In the Mumbai Metropolitan Region (MMR), the five-hour period of intense rain on Wednesday (September 25, 2024) resulted in at least four fatalities. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) predicted on Thursday that there would be “heavy to very heavy rainfall” in Mumbai and other parts of the MMR.

According to BMC, on Thursday, 45-year-old Vimal Gaikwad drowned in the open sewer in the MIDC neighborhood of Andheri. She was saved by the fire department, who then took them to Cooper Hospital. She was brought dead, according to Dr. Jyoti, the CMO of Cooper Hospital, the PRO of the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation said on Thursday.
Lightning strikes in the Thane district were the cause of the three reported deaths in different incidences.
Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) PRO stated on Thursday that “at least 21 short circuits occurred in several parts of Mumbai, 10 wall collapsing incidents were reported on Wednesday, with three people being injured in one of the incidents that took place in Bhandup West.”
On Thursday, IMD issued a red signal for the Palghar district and an orange alert for Mumbai, indicating severe rains. On September 26, however, two private forecasting services, known as “Mumbai Nowcast” (operated by Shivam Khandelwal) and “Mumbai Rains” (managed by Rushikesh Agre), issued a red alert for Thane and Mumbai.
In order to handle any emergencies, 18 NDRF teams and 6 SDRF teams are now stationed throughout Maharashtra. Because of the severe rain, BMC has decided to make Thursday an official vacation for all colleges and schools.
More than 200mm of rain fell in certain areas of the MMR region, resulting in waterlogging and traffic bottlenecks. The Central Suburban Railway, BEST buses, and aircraft operations at Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport were all severely hampered by the nonstop rain.
Between 7 and 9 p.m. Friday night, at least 16 planes were diverted from Mumbai airport to Hyderabad, Ahmedabad, Goa, and Udaipur. The local trains on the Central railway line were at least an hour late, according to the Central Railway PRO.
